How to manually install a custom version Supermetrics connector for Power BI

Supermetrics connector has been certified by Microsoft and comes with Power BI Desktop starting from version 2.128.751.0 (April 2024 update). We highly recommend using the certified version if you can, as it supports scheduled refreshes and other native Power BI features.

This guide will help you to manually install the Supermetrics connector for Power BI if you need to set up a custom version of the connector.

Follow these instructions if you can't launch the Supermetrics connector in Power BI.

  1. Log in to Supermetrics Hub using either Microsoft or Google account. If you're a first-time user, a Supermetrics account will be created for you automatically.
  2. Navigate to DestinationsPower BI.
  3. Click Download now to get the installation file.
  4. Once downloaded, double-click the file to run the set-up wizard.
  5. Click Next to confirm installation and click Finish to close the window.

This set-up wizard will create a folder for custom Power BI connectors, add the Supermetrics connector file and its certificate thumbprint on your computer.

Now, you can open Power BI Desktop, click Get data and find Supermetrics in the list of data sources.

You can see the full set-up steps in the video tutorial below. Please note that the video describes the manual installation process.

"Need admin approval" error when trying to log in to Hub

If your Microsoft account is managed by an admin, you might see an error reading Need admin approval or Approval required when you're logging in to the Supermetrics Hub. Follow the instructions in this article to resolve the issue.

I don't have permission to run installation files on my machine

If you don't have enough permissions to run installation files, you can install the tool manually by creating a specific folder on your PC that Power BI checks for custom connectors, and adding the Supermetrics connector file you can get from our support. Follow the instructions below to install the Supermetrics connector manually. You can also install the trusted Supermetrics connector for Power BI.

Follow the steps below or schedule a walkthrough call with our Power BI expert.

Simple manual setup
  1. Create the following path on your PC: [Documents]\Power BI Desktop\Custom Connectors.
Make sure you use the documents folder for the current user under disk C.
  2. Reach out to our customer support to get the Supermetrics.mez file
  3. Download and save the Supermetrics file to the Custom Connectors folder you created.
  4. Adjust the Power BI settings to allow custom connectors to load. As described in this Microsoft article, open Power BI Desktop, go to FileOptions and SettingsOptions, and find the Security tab.

If you prefer not to change your local security settings, you can "trust" our connector. To do this, you'll need to create a registry key with our certificate on your Windows machine. Take a look at our instructions on how to install the trusted connector.

  5. Under Data Extensions, select (Not Recommended) Allow any extension to load without validation or warning
  6. Click OK.
  7. Restart your Power BI Desktop.

Now, when you open Power BI and click Get data, you'll already be able to find Supermetrics.
