How to create your first Supermetrics query for Power BI

You can find Supermetrics as a connector in Power BI Desktop versions starting from 2.128.751.0 (April 2024 update).

Before you begin

Register a Supermetrics account by logging in to the Supermetrics Hub with your Microsoft or Google account using this link. Registering allows you to access the Supermetrics Hub platform, where you can connect to your data sources and build your initial queries for Power BI.

Microsoft admin approval

If you're using a Microsoft account that is managed by an admin, you might see an error reading Approval required or Need admin approval when you're logging in to the Supermetrics Hub.

Follow these instructions to resolve the admin approval issue.

Connect to data sources

To enable data import from a data platform of your choice, you need to establish a connection between the data source and Supermetrics. There are two places where you can do this: when creating your query, or on the data source management page on the Supermetrics Hub.

The data source management page on the Supermetrics Hub lets you manage all data source connections you have: add new data source connections, re-authorize existing ones, and disconnect or replace a connection that was in use.

The connection will be shared with people who are part of your Supermetrics team. You can have multiple connections to the same data source.

To get started with your first query, create a query from scratch or start with one of our Power BI templates.

Create new query from scratch
  1. On the Supermetrics Hub, click Destinations → Power BI in the left-hand navigation.
  2. Click New query.
  3. Select a data source from the sidebar.
    1. If you're connecting to a data source for the first time, click Connect to log in to your account and create a connection between your data source and Supermetrics.
A login window opens to a new tab where you can connect to the account you want to get data. See our data source connection guides for data source-specific details.
    2. If you already have a connection, you can use the existing ones listed below the data source name.
To add a new connection, click New connection. A login window opens to a new tab where you can connect to the account you want to get data. See our data source connection guides for data source-specific details.
  4. Select a connection to use.

  5. In the sidebar, define the query settings for the data you'd like to see in your report:

    1. Depending on the selected data source, you need to pick accounts to fetch data from or select a report type. Learn more about what you need to connect to various data sources.

    2. Select metrics, such as Impressions or Clicks. See the full list of metrics and dimensions for all our data sources. You can also make modifications to the metrics when selecting the query for the report in the Supermetrics connector for Power BI.

    3. Select dimensions — they define how to split the records. You can, for example, split the data by date or campaign name.

    4. Select any additional filters or options to use.

  6. In the top-right of the preview window, define the date range for the query — use a flexible date range, for example, "last 2 months", and always get data for the previous 2 months. Note that you can change the date range for a particular report using the connector.

  7. Click Apply to check if you get the expected records, and if everything looks good, click Save.

  8. Name your query and add it to a group. To create a new query group, select Create new query group from the drop-down menu.

  9. In Power BI, click Get data in the Home ribbon and select More to view all connectors.

  10. Start typing "Supermetrics" in the search field and click the Supermetrics connector to launch it. The first time you open the connector, you're prompted to log in to your Supermetrics account.

The queries you save on the Hub will be available to you in Power BI Desktop once you sign in to the Supermetrics connector. Feel free to connect multiple data sources and save queries in each to create a combined report, such as a view of your ad accounts across various marketing data sources.

Create new query using template

We have a wide range of templates available for Power BI.

  1. Take a look at our Power BI templates.
  2. Once you've found a template you want to use, click the template to download it to your computer.
  3. Go to the Supermetrics Hub using this link.
  4. Go to the Data sources tab.
  5. Select the data source used in the template and click Connect.
A login window opens to a new tab where you can connect to the account from which you want to get data. See our data source connection guides for data source-specific details.
  6. Once you've connected to the data source, return to Power BI Desktop.
  7. Go to FileImport, and select Power BI template.
  8. Select the template you downloaded, and sign in to Supermetrics. The template will automatically populate with data.
