How to Authenticate Apple Search Ads in Google Sheets, Google Data Studio & Microsoft Excel

This guide gives instructions on how to authenticate Apple Search Ads with Google Sheets and Microsoft Excel.

Data Source Access Requirements:

To enable Supermetrics for Apple Search Ads, you must meet the following requirements:

  • You need to have a separate user account with an API Account Read-only or API Account Manager access. API user can be added by a user with Account Admin access.
    *Please note that users with any other access level than the above-mentioned will not be able to authenticate the data source. 
  • You need a Client ID, Team ID and Key ID which you get by generating an API client. To generate an API client, please see How to generate an API client.


How to generate an API Client: 

Download Public Key Certificate

This video will show you how to open and download a pem.file, using Mac with Data Studio, as an example:


Step-by-step instructions:

1. Open Apple Search Ads in the Supermetrics sidebar, a popup will open in a separate browser.

Click on the link which says Click here to download your public key certificate.

2. Locate the file from your "Downloads" folder. You should see a .pem file similar to the one below:

- Open the .pem file with a text editor (such as Notepad on Windows or TextEdit on Mac). 

Right-click on the file and, under open with select Notepad (on Windows) or TextEdit (on Mac), or a similar text editor. Might require selecting an application manually.


Generate API Client:

This video will show you how to generate an API client from your public key certificate:

Step-by-step instructions:

1. Go to Apple Search Ads and log in with your API Account user by inserting a username and password.

2. Click on your user name on the top-right, and go to Settings.

3. Copy the whole text from the public key certificate file you downloaded earlier. The file should include both BEGIN PUBLIC KEY and END PUBLIC KEY

4. Paste the whole text under Public Key, and click on Generate API client

5. You will get the Client ID, Team ID, and Key ID. Click on Save to save those credentials.

6. Copy-paste the Client ID, Team ID and Key ID to the respective fields in Supermetrics login, and click on start.


Authenticating with Google Sheets

This guide assumes that you have already installed the Supermetrics add-on for Google Sheets. If you haven't installed the add-on yet, see First steps: Getting the Supermetrics Sidebar in Google Sheets.


To authenticate Apple Search Ads in Google Sheets, please do the following steps:

1. Open up the Supermetrics sidebar in your Google Sheets.

2. Select Apple Search Ads in the sidebar, under add data sources.

3. Insert the Client ID, Team ID and Key ID and click on start. To create these credentials, see How to generate API client


4. You have completed all the steps. Now you can go back to the sidebar and select your Apple Search Ads account(s) under select accounts.


Authenticating with Data Studio:

To authenticate Apple Search Ads in Google Data Studio, please do the following steps.

1. Since the data source is in early access, please use this link to authenticate the data source. 

2. Click on Authorize. If you wish to learn more about data security and data privacy, please see this page.


3.  Insert the Client ID, Team ID and Key ID and click on start. To create these credentials, see How to generate API client.

4. Select your account(s) to proceed.

5. Click on connect on the top right side to continue.

6. By default, there will be a list of fields. You can skip this list and click on create report.

7. As a final step, click on add to report

Adding additional user accounts or removing old ones with Data Studio


1. Click on the link below to add additional user accounts or to remove old user accounts. If you don't need to add/remove user accounts, you can skip this step.

2. If you wish to add a user account, click on Add Apple Search Ads user account. If you wish to remove a user account, click on the bin icon. To continue with the same user account, click on continue.


Team management with Data Studio

From the link below, you can access your team management page, where you can change assigned users on your license, add new team members, etc. For more details, see Team Management Basics.


Authenticating with Excel:

This guide assumes that you have already installed the Supermetrics add-on for Excel. If you haven't installed the add-on yet, see First steps: Getting the Supermetrics Sidebar into Excel.


To authenticate Apple Search Ads in Excel, please do the following steps:

1. Click on data and open up the Supermetrics sidebar in Excel.

2. Select Apple Search Ads in the sidebar under add data source.


3. Insert the Client ID, Team ID and Key ID and click on start. To create these credentials, see How to generate API client.

4. You have completed all the steps. Now you can go back to the sidebar and select your Apple Search Ads account(s) under select accounts.

Common errors:

If you encounter any of the following errors below, please see the guide linked after the error message.

Common errors

  • Error: "Authentication failed" & "You need to re-authenticate at X and then run the query again.", please see this guide.
  • Error: "This was a reauthorization request for user X but logged in as user Y", please see this guide
  • Error: "You're not allowed to run queries with this license #12345. This is because you have not been assigned to the license as a valid user." please see this guide.
  • Error: "This action is not supported when you are signed into multiple accounts". please see this guide.
  • If you no longer see a specific account/page/etc. when logging in, please see this guide
  • If you haven't managed to authenticate you might be affected by an issue at Google account management. For more information, please see this guide.
