Mailchimp report building guide

With the Mailchimp data source connector, you can pull all data related to your email campaigns, such as email campaign details, industry, time, and A/B testing details. Store data in your chosen destination and create historical reports to see which campaign has worked the best.

For a full list of metrics and dimensions available in our Mailchimp data source connector, take a look at our Mailchimp documentation.

Once you’ve connected to Mailchimp, you're ready to create your first query in Google Sheets, Looker Studio (formerly Data Studio), or Excel.

Query types for this data source

When connecting to the Mailchimp data source in Looker Studio, you must select a query type to use. The query type defines what sort of metrics and dimensions are available.

  • Automations: Returns automations. Does not include customer journeys.
  • Automation emails: Returns individual emails in a classic automation workflow.
  • Lists: Returns Mailchimp lists, also known as "audience".
  • Campaigns: Returns campaigns from your Mailchimp account.
  • List activity: Returns daily aggregated activity stats for your list. For example, view unsubscribes, signups, total emails sent, opens, clicks, and more, for up to 180 days.
  • List growth history: Returns a summary of the month-by-month growth activity for a specific list.
  • List locations: Returns locations (countries) of subscriber lists.
  • List members: Returns members of a specific Mailchimp list, including currently subscribed, unsubscribed, and bounced members.

Note that if you need to use multiple query types in your Looker Studio report, you'll need to create separate connectors for each query type you use.

Try these queries

See the following use cases for examples on how to set up queries.

See open rate of your emails

Take a look at the open rate of the emails you sent out with your campaigns this month.

The "Open rate" metric shows the number of unique opens divided by the total number of successful deliveries.

In Looker Studio, use the "Campaign" query type.

For best results in Looker Studio, use the scorecard chart type.

  1. Set the date range to This month to date.
  2. Select the Open rate metric.

See number of members on your mailing lists

Fetch all your mailing lists with the number of active members in them.

The "Member count" metric shows the number of active members in the list.

In Looker Studio, use the "List members" query type.

For best results in Looker Studio, use the table chart type.

  1. Select the Member count metric.
  2. Select the List name dimension to split the query results by list.

See sent emails, opens, and clicks per campaign

Explore how many emails you sent for a campaign and how many times the recipients opened the email and clicked on it.

The "Emails sent" metric shows the total number of emails sent for this campaign, and the "Unique opens" metric shows the total number of unique opens. The "Total clicks" metric shows the total number of clicks for the campaign.

In Looker Studio, use the "Campaign" query type.

For best results in Looker Studio, use the table chart type.

  1. Select the Emails sent, Unique opens, and Total clicks metrics.
  2. Select the Campaign name dimension to split the query results by campaign.

Set up scheduled refreshes for your reports

You can set up scheduled refreshes for your reports created in Google Sheets and Excel. Follow the instructions on how to create and manage scheduled reports in Google Sheets and how to set up scheduled report triggers in Excel.

In Looker Studio, you can have a copy of your report emailed to you and important stakeholders at regular intervals.
