Semrush Analytics report building guide

Use the Semrush Analytics connector to report your keyword visibility, CPC, and search volume. Pull data to any destination and create historical reports to see how your search volumes have developed over time and how your CPC has changed with that.

For a full list of metrics and dimensions available in our Semrush Analytics data source connector, take a look at our Semrush Analytics documentation

Once you’ve connected to Semrush Analytics, you’re ready to create your first query in Google Sheets, Looker Studio, or Excel.

Query types for this data source

When connecting to the Semrush Analytics data source, you must select a query type to use. The query type defines what sort of metrics and dimensions are available.

Semrush Analytics has multiple combinations of query types, metrics and dimensions. You may need to browse through the different query types to find which one of those has the metrics and dimensions that you need. Semrush Analytics supports 5 main types of queries — Domain, Keyword, URLs, Display Ads, and Backlinks — for a total of 35 different query types.

Our connector uses the same structure as the API reports with the same names, so you can use the Semrush Analytics API documentation to explore the full range of reports and fields.

Note

Some of the data provided by Semrush Analytics doesn’t have any historical data available.

Semrush Analytics has a unique way of handling date settings. See this article for more details.

Special requirements for queries using the Domain query type

In Semrush, the "Domain Vs. Domain" query type requires that a specific formatting be used in the Domains. If this isn't used, queries won't return data.

Format your Domain queries like this, with each additional domain you want to compare separated by a | character:

<sign>|<type>|<domain>

You can use the these values for the <sign> parameter:

  • + : Returns every keyword that the entered domains are ranking for in Google's top 100.
  • -  : Returns keywords that are unique to the first domain listed. You can view the keywords that the first domain ranks for, but the second does not rank for
  • *  : Returns keywords that are unique to each domain, not shared by any of the other domains listed.

You can use these values for the <type> parameter:

  • or : For organic keywords
  • ad: For paid keywords

The <domain> parameter will be the base domain for the site you want to compare, like supermetrics.com or ebay.com.

Here's an example that compares ebay.com to imdb.com, looking for the organic keywords that are unique to each of the two domains listed:

*|or|ebay.com|*|or|imdb.com

Please note that you can only compare up to 5 domains at a time.

Note that if you need to use multiple query types in your Looker Studio report, you'll need to create separate connectors for each query type you use.

Try these queries

See the following use cases for examples on how to use the metrics and dimensions.

See organic traffic

View the organic traffic to your website.

Use the "Domain overview history" query type.

The "Organic traffic" metric shows the traffic brought to a website via Google's top 20 organic search results.

For best results in Looker Studio, use the table chart type.

  1. Select the Domain overview history query type and insert the domain.
  2. Select the Organic traffic metric.
  3. Select the Year & month dimension to split the query results by month.

See search volume and CPC

View the organic keyword search volume for your site, along with the average price of a click for an ad with a keyword.

Use the "Domain organic search keywords" query type.

The "CPC" metric shows the average price in US dollars advertisers pay for a user's click on an ad containing a particular keyword (Google Ads). The "Search volume" metric shows the average number of times users have searched for a given keyword per month. We calculate this value over the last 12 months.

For best results in Looker Studio, use the table chart type.

  1. Select the Domain organic search keywords query type and insert the domain.
  2. Select the CPC and Search volume metrics.
  3. Select the Keyword and Position dimensions to split the query results by keyword and position.

See the authority score of your domain

Take a look at the authority score of your domain or URL.

Use the "Backlinks overview" query type.

The "Authority score" metric measures the overall quality of domain/URL and influence on SEO. The score is based on the number of backlinks, referring domains, organic search traffic, and other data.

For best results in Looker Studio, use the table or bar chart type.

  1. Select the Backlinks overview query type and insert the target.
  2. Select the Authority score metric.
  3. Select the Requested object dimension to include this in your query.

Set up scheduled refreshes for your reports

You can set up scheduled refreshes for your reports created in Google Sheets and Excel. Follow the instructions on how to create and manage scheduled reports in Google Sheets and how to set up scheduled report triggers in Excel.

In Looker Studio, you can have a copy of your report emailed to you and important stakeholders at regular intervals.

Troubleshooting

If you encounter an error that says your API units balance is zero, your Semrush account has run out of API units. It won't be able to make more queries until more units are added to it. You can purchase more units on Semrush's site — you might have to wait some time after doing this for the units to update in your account.
