Instagram Insights and Instagram Public Data: Query setup guide

Once you’ve authenticated your connection to Instagram Insights/Instagram Public Data, you’re ready to create your first query. This guide will walk you through Instagram Insights and Instagram Public Data query setup for Google Sheets, Data Studio, and Excel, as well as data warehouse destinations like Google Cloud Storage, BigQuery, and the Supermetrics API.

Before you begin

To connect Supermetrics to Instagram Insights, you need:

  • The Instagram account must be an Instagram Business Account (may also be called a "Professional account"). It does not work with Personal or Creator accounts. Visit Instagram’s help center to learn how to change your account type.
  • The Instagram account must be linked to an active Facebook Page.
  • The linked Facebook Page may need to be "claimed" before it can be properly connected
  • The Instagram account needs to use Facebook user authentication. It does not work with Instagram user authentication.
  • The Facebook user account you use to log into Supermetrics must have sufficient access to the linked Facebook Page. Sufficient access means a valid Facebook user account with permissions sets View Page performance and Create ads.Admin access ( "Admin Access - Manage Page"), while not required, will also work.
  • If you’re using the new Pages experience, you must have full control access to the Facebook Page linked to the Instagram account.

To connect Supermetrics to Instagram Public Data, you need:

IGTV posts

With Instagram Insights you can fetch IGTV posts data with these media objects:

  • IGTV video title
  • Media product type

Limitations - Instagram Public Data

  • One Instagram profile can search max 30 hashtags within a rolling 7-day period. Having access to multiple profiles will increase the quota amount.
  • If you have access to multiple profiles, Supermetrics divides the searches evenly among these profiles. This means that if you have access to 2 profiles, you can search for 60 different hashtags during a 7-day period.
  • Reaching the quota limit will cause an error.
  • Querying with the same hashtag multiple times within the period only counts as 1 hashtag.
  • Hashtag limitation is tied to an Instagram profile. It means that if you fetch posts with #marketing using the Supermetrics profile, for example, that would count as 1 used hashtag for all the users who have access to the Supermetrics profile.
  • Post search returns only posts that are public and do not contain identifiable information.
  • Stories, Reels, IGTV, and promoted/boosted media are not returned.
  • Post search doesn’t support emoji-hashtags.
  • Recent search returns only posts published within the last 24 hours (API limitation), and results are capped at the 250 most recent posts.
  • Top search returns 100 top posts. Top posts are defined by Instagram (and not necessarily based on likes/comments) and can vary per query. Please see hashtag Top search in IG as a reference.
  • Username or other information from the posting account can’t be returned.
  • The Number of hashtags metric — and the Hashtags and Matching hashtag dimensions — only work with hashtags posted in captions. They omit hashtags added in comments.
