How to use a Supermetrics report template in Looker Studio

Supermetrics offers a wide range of free report templates for Looker Studio (formerly Data Studio). Visit our template gallery to explore the full collection.

There are 2 ways to create your own reports from these templates in Looker Studio: download them through our template gallery, or add them through a data source file.

Instructions

Add a template from the gallery

Before you begin, ensure you're logged into Looker Studio with the Google account you use with Supermetrics.

  1. Log in to Looker Studio.
  2. In a new browser tab, open the Supermetrics Looker Studio template gallery.
  3. Select a template that matches your data sources.
  4. Click the template. This opens the template in Looker Studio — if it asks you to log in, use the Google Account that you use with Supermetrics.
  5. On the top right, click Use my own data.
  6. Click Replace data.
  7. Select the Supermetrics data source to connect to the template, and connect to the data source. Take a look at our connection guides for more details.
  8. Select accounts and other options.
  9. Click Add.
  10. Click Add to report.

Once these steps are complete, you can fully customize the template — add, remove, and modify charts and tables to meet your needs.

Add a template with a data source file

Follow these steps to add a new Supermetrics data source to Looker Studio.

At the last step, navigate to the bottom of the data source window and select Use report templates for new reports before clicking Connect.

Please note that if you choose this option, the default Supermetrics template for the selected data source will be used whenever you create a new report from this data source file.

Troubleshooting

"Get report failed" error

If the template throws a Get report failed error when you're trying to set it up, take a look at the URL of the template. If the URL ends with /preview, remove that part and reload the page. You should now see a 3-dot menu in the top-right corner. Click the 3-dot menu and select Make a copy. Then, replace the unknown data source with your data source as instructed on the template's instruction page.

Data sources

The data source used in the Supermetrics template needs to be by Supermetrics and the same as the template is using — for example, our Google Analytics 4 template uses the Google Analytics 4 data source by Supermetrics.

If the template uses multiple data sources, check the template's instructions page for the correct order of data sources to connect to. If the list of data sources in the correct order is missing from the template instructions, please contact our support team.

Templates with "Unknown" as their original data source

Some templates from Supermetrics pull data from multiple data sources shown as "Unknown" under Original Data Source when you click Make a copy. Please follow the instructions linked in the templates to identify the data sources, query types, and the order of data sources inserted in the template.

Set a target value in a report template

Sometimes, you might need to customize a Supermetrics template's "Target value" report element. The "Target value" report element is available for some widgets only, such as the bullet chart.

For example, page 2 of our Google My Business report template features a report element that displays data based on whether a target has been met. You can customize the target's value to make it as useful as possible for your report.

Follow these instructions to set your own value in this report element.

  1. Open your report template in Looker Studio.
  2. In Edit mode, click the report element you'd like to customize.
  3. Navigate to the Data section in the Supermetrics sidebar.
  4. Scroll to the Target section.
  5. In the Target value field, set the value you want.

Repeat these steps for any other report elements in your template that need custom target values.
